Bordered by Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Greece, it’s a gateway to stunning beaches, majestic mountains, and historical towns.

A Unique Geographical Link

Albania connects the Adriatic and Ionian coastlines with the Balkan interior, creating a natural entry point for those seeking a mix of nature, culture, and adventure.

A Booming Tourism Industry

Albania’s popularity has soared in recent years. By September 2024, Albania recorded approximately 4.95 million visitor arrivals, up from 2.93 million in June 2024. Many travelers arrive by road, drawn by Albania’s affordability and pristine landscapes. Key routes such as Hani i Hotit (to Montenegro) and Morina (to Kosovo) have become busy travel corridors.

Improved Infrastructure

Traveling to and from Albania has never been easier. With 15 official border crossings and modernized facilities, the country is well-prepared to accommodate increasing traffic. Major checkpoints like Qafë Thanë (near Lake Ohrid) and Kapshtica (on the Greek border) now feature efficient processes and shorter wait times.

What to Expect at Albanian Border Crossings

Modern Facilities with a Local Flavor

While Albanian border crossings are equipped with necessary amenities, they often have a relaxed pace characteristic of the region. Patience is key, as occasional delays can occur.

Timing Your Trip

Peak travel periods, such as weekends, holidays, and summer months (June-August), can lead to longer waits. To avoid congestion:

Early mornings (6:00–9:00 AM): Best for quicker processing.

Late evenings (after 9:00 PM): Another low-traffic window.

Wait times typically range from 15 to 45 minutes, though delays during peak season could extend to a few hours.

Friendly but Thorough Inspections

Border officials are generally approachable, but they’ll carefully review your documents. Be prepared for:

Passport or ID checks.

Verification of car registration and insurance.

Basic questions about your travel plans.

Top Border Crossings in Albania

Hani i Hotit (Albania–Montenegro)

Located near Shkodër, this crossing offers scenic drives alongside Lake Skadar. It’s a favorite among tourists heading to Montenegro’s coastline.

Tips: Fill up on fuel in Shkodër (prices are higher in Montenegro). Carry Euros for tolls and small fees.

Kapshtica (Albania–Greece)

Situated 70 km from Korçë, this checkpoint provides access to Northern Greece. The route is lined with picturesque vineyards and rolling hills.

Tips: Avoid Greek holidays to minimize wait times. Fuel up before crossing, as Greek fuel prices are typically higher.

Morina (Albania–Kosovo)

This crossing near Kukës is known for its efficiency and stunning rural landscapes. It’s ideal for travelers heading to Pristina or exploring Kosovo’s attractions.

Tips: Travel during midday to avoid crowds. Carry Euros for purchases and ensure your GPS is updated for detours.

Qafë Thanë (Albania–North Macedonia)

Close to Lake Ohrid, this route is perfect for those seeking breathtaking views and cultural exploration.

Tips: Bring Macedonian Denars for local expenses. Avoid late crossings due to limited road lighting.

Documents You’ll Need to Cross Albanian Borders by Road

For Entry into Albania

To ensure a hassle-free entry into Albania, here are the essential documents you need to have:

Passport or ID Card: If you are an EU national, a valid ID card is sufficient for entry. However, travelers from other countries must present a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. Always double-check the expiration date to avoid issues at the border.

Pro Tip: Keep a photocopy or digital scan of your ID or passport as a backup in case it gets lost.

Visa Requirements: Albania offers visa-free entry for up to 90 days within 180 days for most tourists, including those from the EU, UK, US, Canada, and Australia. However, travelers from countries requiring a visa should apply well in advance through their nearest Albanian embassy. Ensure you bring supporting documents like proof of accommodation and a return ticket.

Vehicle Documents (if Driving)

Driver’s License: Your national license is accepted if it’s in English or Albanian. For other languages, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory. Secure one before your trip.

Vehicle Registration Documents: Carry your car’s registration papers. If you’re driving a rental car, confirm the agreement explicitly allows for international travel.

Insurance: Green Card Insurance is mandatory in Albania to cover third-party liability. Verify that your policy includes Albania. If not, you can purchase temporary insurance at the border.

For Exiting Albania

Rental Car Permissions: Contact our team at Shehu Rental Cars so that we can provide written authorization for cross-border travel. Our agents will also inform you whether you need cross-border insurance, valid for specific countries. Confirm your destination is included.

Customs Check: Be prepared for a brief vehicle inspection. Avoid carrying restricted or undeclared items, such as large quantities of alcohol, cigarettes, or over €10,000 in cash without declaration.

Know the Entry Requirements of Neighboring Countries: Albania’s neighbors—Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Greece—may have different toll systems, road taxes, or health document requirements. Research in advance to ensure a smooth crossing.

What to Expect When Driving Beyond Albania

Road Conditions

Road infrastructure in Albania has significantly improved, particularly along major highways such as Tirana-Durrës (38 km) and Tirana-Saranda (280 km). However, rural roads may still be narrow, winding, and occasionally feature potholes.

Neighboring Countries: Montenegro and Greece boast excellent road networks, including scenic highways and modern expressways. North Macedonia and Kosovo’s main routes are also well-maintained, although some rural roads may have uneven patches.

Traffic Rules and Safety Tips

Drive on the right-hand side.

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers.

Speed limits: 40-45 km/h in towns, 75-80 km/h on rural roads, and 110-130 km/h on highways.

Keep headlights on during the day in some countries (e.g., Montenegro and North Macedonia).

Police checkpoints near border areas may require all documents, including a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance papers.

Tip: Be aware of local driving styles, which can be unpredictable. Drive defensively, especially in rural areas where stray animals or sudden stops are common.

Tolls and Fuel Stations

Toll Roads: Albania’s toll roads are few but notable, such as the Kalimash Tunnel on the way to Kosovo. Payments must be made in cash (Lek or Euros). Neighboring countries like Greece have extensive toll systems, requiring coins or prepaid passes.

Fuel Stations: While fuel stations are common along highways, rural regions may lack them. Montenegro and Greece offer well-equipped rest areas with cafes and clean restrooms. In Albania, roadside eateries and guesthouses are prevalent on highways.

Tip: Before heading to remote destinations, ensure your tank is full and carry essential supplies like water, snacks, and a first-aid kit.

Best Stops Along Albanian Borders

Montenegro (Hani i Hotit)

Top Stops: Lake Skadar, Rozafa Castle in Shkodër.

Tips: Start early to avoid border crowds. Montenegro uses Euros exclusively, so exchange Lek beforehand.

Kosovo (Morina)

Top Stops: Kukës, Valbona Valley National Park.

Tips: Midday crossings avoid peak queues. Keep Euros handy for tolls and roadside purchases.

North Macedonia (Qafë Thanë)

Top Stops: Lake Ohrid, Pogradec.

Tips: Plan extra time to explore Ohrid’s rich history and natural beauty.

Greece (Kapshtica or Kakavija)

Top Stops: Gjirokastër, Korçë.

Tips: Avoid weekends or Greek holidays to skip long queues. Fuel up in Albania, as prices in Greece are higher.

Final Notes

Crossing Albanian borders by road offers not only the convenience of exploring multiple countries but also the opportunity to experience the region’s stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

By preparing your documents, researching your routes, and allowing time for unexpected detours, you can transform your border-crossing journey into an unforgettable part of your adventure. Be prepared for sudden lane changes and pedestrians crossing unexpectedly. As in any other country, defensive driving and staying focused on the road are essential for a safe journey.

Be Cautious on Winding Mountain Roads

Albania’s rugged terrain means you’ll encounter narrow, winding roads, particularly in mountainous regions like the Albanian Alps or the Llogara Pass. Drive at a controlled speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and use lower gears when descending steep inclines to maintain control.

Consider The Type of Vehicle You Need

Some rural areas may be a bit challenging for standard vehicles. If your itinerary includes off-road destinations, such as remote villages or the Valbona-Theth hiking route, consider renting a 4×4 vehicle to navigate safely and comfortably.

Always Carry Essential Documents

Keep your driver’s license, international driver’s permit (if required), rental agreement, and proof of insurance in the car at all times.

Follow Local Traffic Laws

Headlights must be turned on at all times, even during the day, as per Albanian law. Speed limits and road signs may not always be clearly marked, so drive conservatively and adhere to general guidelines.

Car Rental in Albania: Logistics

When planning your Albanian adventure, understanding the logistics of renting a car can make a significant difference. This section breaks down costs, car types, rental locations, and tips for navigating Albanian roads.

How Much Does Renting a Car in Albania Cost?

The costs for renting a car in Albania are quite affordable compared to many other European destinations. However, prices can vary depending on the season and car type.

Economy Cars: A five-seater Golf 6, costing €35 per day, would amount to approximately €245 / $266 per week. This car is ideal for urban and coastal driving, offering a comfortable ride for city exploration.

Commercial Vans: The Volkswagen Caddy, at €60 per day, costs around €420 / $452 per week. This vehicle is great for those needing more cargo space or planning to travel with a larger group, while also maintaining good handling for rural areas.

Pro Tip: While smaller economy cars like the Golf 6 are perfect for urban and coastal areas, renting a vehicle like the Volkswagen Caddy offers flexibility if you have extra luggage or plan on longer trips with more gear.

Should You Rent a Car at Tirana Airport?

Tirana International Airport is the primary entry point for most visitors. As such you will find many options for car rental at Tirana Airport, including Shehu Rental Cars. However, consider these points:

Avoid Renting Immediately: If you’re spending time in Tirana, skip renting a car upon arrival. The city has excellent public transport, and navigating its traffic and parking can be challenging.

When to Rent: After exploring Tirana, rent a car for the rest of your trip. You can either pick up the car in the city center or return to the airport to start your road trip.

What Kind of Car Should You Rent in Albania?

Albania’s roads vary from well-maintained highways to rugged rural paths, so choosing the right rental car type is essential.

Economy Cars: Ideal for city travel and coastal towns with decent road conditions.

4×4 Vehicles: Perfect for mountainous regions and rural adventures. These cars are built to handle potholes and steep inclines.

Pro Tip: Even if you’re not venturing far off-road, renting a car with a powerful engine can make navigating Albania’s hilly terrain much easier.

Best Companies for Car Rentals in Albania

Albania offers a mix of global brands and local providers. Popular options include global and various local providers like Shehu Rental Cars.

Keep in mind that renting from a local provider is usually the most cost-effective option!

Tips for Choosing a Rental Company:

Check reviews on Trustpilot and Google Maps to ensure reliability.

Avoid deals that seem too good to be true.

Book through trusted aggregators for transparent pricing and full insurance options.

Tips for Renting a Car in Albania

Booking in Advance is Essential

The demand for rental cars in Albania, especially during peak seasons, often exceeds the supply. Booking your rental car early—preferably through a trusted car rental agency like Shehu Rental Cars—ensures that you secure the vehicle you need. If you prefer automatic transmission, reserve at least a month ahead, as manual cars are more common in Albania.

Opt for Full Insurance Coverage

Driving in Albania comes with risks due to road conditions and other drivers. While third-party liability insurance is included in rental agreements by law, upgrading to full insurance coverage is highly recommended.

This comprehensive policy will protect against unforeseen damages to the rental car, injuries, and third-party liabilities. Carefully review the insurance terms to understand any exclusions, such as driving on unpaved roads, which might invalidate your coverage.

Payment and Security Deposits

When renting a car in Albania, always use a credit card. Most rental companies will place a hold on your card as a security deposit, which is released upon the safe return of the car. Paying with a debit card can lead to funds being temporarily withdrawn from your account, potentially disrupting your travel budget.

Document the Car’s Condition

Before driving off, inspect the car thoroughly. Check for any existing damage, such as scratches, dents, or interior wear, and ensure these are documented on the rental agreement. Take photos or videos of the car’s exterior and interior for additional proof. This small effort can save you from disputes when returning the car.

The post Renting a Car in Albania: Your Ultimate 2025 Guide appeared first on Rent Car Albania.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license from your home country. If your license isn’t in the Roman alphabet, you’ll also need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

ID or Passport: A government-issued ID or passport is required to verify your identity.

Credit Card: Rental companies usually ask for a credit card in your name to handle payment and security deposits.

Most car rental companies in Albania require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Some might also ask that you’ve had your license for one to three years. If you’re under 25, you may need to pay a small extra fee, around $3.50 per day.

Is Renting a Car in Albania Safe?

Yes, renting a car in Albania is safe. The road system has improved a lot in recent years and driving gives you the chance to see Albania’s stunning landscapes. However, driving styles in Albania can be a bit chaotic, especially in cities like Tirana. Stay calm, follow the rules and make sure to get insurance to protect yourself.

Rental Car Insurance in Albania

When you rent a car in Albania, basic insurance (called third-party liability or CDW) is included by law. This covers damages to other people’s property. But it’s a good idea to get extra insurance to cover things like minor scratches, theft, or accidents. Here are your options:

Full Insurance: Costs approximately $10-$20 per day and covers more damages.

Credit Card Insurance: Some credit cards offer rental car insurance. Check if yours does before you book.

Make sure you have proof of insurance and the car’s documents with you while driving. Police often set up random checkpoints to check these.

Who Can Rent a Car in Albania?

Here’s what you need to rent a car in Albania:

Be Old Enough: Most companies require you to be 21 or older. Some might need you to be at least 23 or 25.

Have Experience: You’ll usually need at least one to three years of driving experience.

Follow the Rules: Albania has strict driving laws, like a zero-tolerance policy for drunk driving and keeping your headlights on at all times.

Tips for Renting and Driving in Albania

1. Check the Car Before You Drive

Walk around the car and check for any scratches or dents before driving off. Take photos or videos and make sure the rental company notes any existing damage.

2. Use Navigation Apps

Google Maps is a great tools for finding your way. It’ll help you avoid getting lost, especially in rural areas.

3. Plan for Fuel Stops

Most cars use diesel or unleaded fuel. Check which one your rental car needs. Gas stations are easy to find in cities but less common in remote areas, so plan ahead.

4. Be Careful on Mountain Roads

Roads in cities and along the coast are in good condition, but rural and mountain roads can be bumpy or narrow. Main highways and city roads are well-lit and maintained, making night driving smoother than ever. However, rural and mountain roads may still lack proper lighting, so extra caution is needed in those areas.

Albania has achieved a 23% reduction in annual road fatalities, reflecting significant progress in road safety. Additionally, very few accidents occur at night, making nighttime driving generally safe for most travelers!

Tips for Driving Safely at Night in Albania

1. Stick to Main Roads

Main roads and highways are your safest bet for night driving. They are well-lit and more likely to have other traffic, making it easier to navigate.

2. Use GPS Navigation

Reliable navigation apps like Google Maps are essential. They can help you avoid poorly lit or difficult routes.

3. Avoid Speeding

Night driving requires slower speeds due to reduced visibility. Stick to the speed limits and drive cautiously.

4. Watch for Pedestrians and Animals

In rural areas, pedestrians and animals can appear on the road unexpectedly. Stay alert, especially on unlit roads.

5. Check Your Lights

Before heading out, ensure your headlights, tail lights and indicators are working properly. Keeping your headlights on at all times is mandatory in Albania.

Why Driving at Night in Albania Can Be a Good Idea

While day trips are popular, driving at night in Albania has its perks:

Quieter Roads: Nighttime means less traffic, especially in busy cities like Tirana.

Whether you’re navigating through busy streets or seeking parking in the heart of the city, here’s a guide to help you get around more easily and safely.

1. Dealing with Traffic in Tirana

Tirana has seen significant urban growth in recent years, leading to increased traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours. The central areas, especially near Skanderbeg Square, the Boulevard of the Martyrs of the Nation and the vicinity of major landmarks, can become quite packed. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Rush Hour: Traffic is heaviest during the morning and evening rush hours, typically between 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM and again from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Avoid driving during these times if possible or plan your route carefully to avoid the busiest streets.

Local Driving Behavior: While Albanian drivers are generally polite, be prepared for frequent lane changes, especially in busy areas and always be vigilant.

2. Using Google Maps and Other Navigation Tools

Google Maps is widely used in Tirana and is an excellent tool to navigate the city, though it’s important to note that real-time traffic data may not always be as accurate as in other larger cities. Here’s how to get the best out of your navigation app:

Live Traffic Updates: Google Maps provides live traffic updates, but some smaller streets or new developments may not be accurately mapped. If possible, verify your route with locals or check with your rental agency for alternative directions.

Offline Maps: If you’re traveling to more remote areas or experiencing a weak mobile signal, download offline maps before you set off. This is especially useful for areas outside of central Tirana, where internet connectivity can be spotty.

3. Finding Parking in Tirana

Parking in Tirana can be a challenge, particularly in the city center. Streets are often crowded with parked cars and public parking can be limited. Here are some strategies to make parking easier:

Paid Parking Zones: Central Tirana has designated paid parking zones. These are marked with signs indicating where and when you can park and the cost. Make sure to check for any time restrictions, as fines can be issued for exceeding parking limits.

Parking Garages: There are a few parking garages in the city center, such as near the Grand Park (Parku i Madh) and around major shopping areas. While these can be more expensive, they are safer and more reliable if you’re looking for a guaranteed spot.

Street Parking: In some areas, street parking is available but limited to specific hours. Be cautious of illegal parking, as it’s common for vehicles to be towed if they block traffic or are parked in restricted zones.

Use Your Hotel’s Parking: If you’re staying in a hotel, check if they offer private parking. Many hotels in Tirana provide this service for their guests, which can alleviate the stress of finding parking.

4. General Tips for Driving in Tirana

Pedestrian Zones: Tirana has pedestrian-only zones in certain parts of the city, such as around Skanderbeg Square and the pedestrian walkway along the Lana River. Be aware of these areas to avoid driving in restricted zones.

Street Signs and Signals: While most roads have street signs and traffic lights, some areas, especially older parts of the city, may not be as clearly marked. Always be cautious and drive slowly when navigating unfamiliar streets.

Final Thoughts

Driving at night in Albania is safe and manageable if you take the necessary precautions. Crime against foreigners is very rare, close to nonexistent. Car theft is also extremely rare in Albania. Tourists are 100% safe in tourist hotspots, as well as in other areas.

Also, keep in mind that locals are truly welcoming and friendly. If anything, they will go above and beyond to make foreigners feel at home, as this is part of the Albanian hospitality culture. If you need anything, ask anyone around you and they’ll be more than happy to help.

Naturally, renting a car in Albania is safe, especially if you choose a reputable car rental agency and avoid rental car scams. Major rental companies such as Shehu Rental Cars operate all over Albania, including busy spots such as Tirana Airport. So, you’ll be able to easily find a reputable rental car the moment you land.

If you’re looking for transparent pricing, broad coverage options, competitive rates and ongoing support and guidance, we highly recommend that you contact Shehu Rental Cars. Our team is always readily available to help you find a top-quality vehicle that is both affordable and meets your needs.

What You Need to Know About Driving in Albania

Essential Driving Tips

Driving in Albania can be a rewarding experience, but it’s essential to be aware of a few local driving practices. Albanians are known for a more assertive driving style than many visitors might be accustomed to, so staying alert and confident on the road is important. Key tips for driving safely include:

Drive on the Right: Albania follows the standard European rule of driving on the right side of the road.

Keep Your Lights On: It is required by law to drive with your headlights on, even during the day.

Stay Alert: Defensive driving is a must. Be prepared for sudden stops or unexpected actions from other drivers.

While it may sound challenging, once you get used to it, driving in Albania becomes quite manageable, especially if you are comfortable driving in urban or mountainous areas.

Road Conditions

The main highways in Albania are generally well-maintained, connecting major tourist destinations such as Tirana, Durrës and Saranda. However, when you venture off the beaten path, particularly in mountainous or rural areas, roads may be narrower and occasionally bumpy or less maintained.

If you plan to explore remote regions, renting a 4×4 can be beneficial for navigating rougher terrain and reaching some of the country’s most scenic spots. Remember that you can always ask our car rental agents for advice on which types of rental cars are the best considering your itinerary and scheduled route.

Benefits of Renting a Car in Albania

One of the biggest advantages of renting a car in Albania is the freedom and flexibility. When you’re on vacation, you want to be free, spontaneous and relaxed. Knowing you can travel at your own pace, set off whenever you want to and make as many pit stops usually seals the deal for most foreigners.

Moreover, although public transportation in Albania is available, it may not reach every destination that you wish to visit. If you are considering going to remote attractions, isolated islands and beaches or mountainous regions, having your own rental car at your disposal is definitely your safest bet.

Apart from the convenience and flexibility, car rental in Albania is the cheapest way to explore the country. Compared to other European countries, renting a car in Albania is quite affordable. Daily rental rates can start as low as $12, although prices vary based on factors such as vehicle type, rental duration, and seasonal demand.

Budget-friendly companies like Shehu Rental Cars provide affordable car rental rates and excellent customer reviews, especially if you book in advance.

And let’s not forget the fact that a rental car allows you to design your trip down to the smallest detail. From the music playlist to your choice of pit stops, having your own car is a guaranteed way to explore all parts of Albania in peace and quiet.

Is it Worth Renting a Car in Albania?

Absolutely! Renting a car in Albania opens up a range of experiences that simply aren’t accessible without your own vehicle. Here are a few reasons why car rental is definitely worth it:

Many of Albania’s treasures lie off the main tourist routes, tucked away in the mountains or along the coastline. With a car, you can explore lesser-known places like Ksamil or the Valbona Valley.

Albania’s public transportation system, though expanding, does not cover every corner of the country. A car gives you access to scenic, remote spots without the hassle of coordinating buses or taxis.

You can cover more ground in a shorter time, especially if you’re on a limited schedule. Renting a car lets you make the most of every moment of your trip.

How to Rent a Car in Albania: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose a Reliable Car Rental Platform

There are several options for renting a car in Albania, but Shehu Rental Cars is a trusted choice due to its transparent pricing and range of options. By booking through a reputable platform, you can ensure a hassle-free experience without hidden fees.

Step 2: Review Rental Policies and Requirements

Albania has specific requirements for renting a car:

Driver’s License: An international driving permit (IDP) is recommended if your license isn’t in Albanian or English.

Age Limit: You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car, though drivers under 25 may incur an additional fee.

Insurance Options: Full coverage insurance is highly recommended.

Step 3: Compare Vehicles and Make Your Reservation

When selecting a rental car, we advise you to cross-reference and compare different types of vehicles. Our agents can also help you choose the most suitable vehicle for your needs. Also we recommend that you make your booking in advance to secure the cheapest rates, discount deals and to make sure that your chosen vehicle is available.

FAQs on Renting a Car in Albania

Can I Rent a Car in Albania with a U.S. License?

Yes, U.S. license holders can rent a car in Albania as long as they have an IDP. The IDP serves as an official translation of your home country’s license and helps avoid language barriers if you’re stopped by local authorities.

Can I Rent a Car in Albania with a UK License?

Yes, UK license holders can rent a car in Albania. However, a “1968” International Driving Permit is required, which you can obtain from a UK Post Office. Be sure to carry both your UK license and your IDP while driving.

What Type of Car Should I Rent?

The best type of car depends on your travel plans. If you’re sticking to main highways and city streets, an economy car will be sufficient. However, for those planning to explore rural areas or mountainous routes, a 4×4 with a sturdy engine is recommended.

Final Thoughts on Renting a Car in Albania

Renting a car in Albania is a safe, convenient, and budget-friendly option that enhances your travel experience, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Whether you’re drawn to the vibrant city life in Tirana or the beauty of the Albanian Alps, having your own vehicle transforms your trip into an unforgettable adventure.

With reliable rental agencies, affordable options, and a wide range of scenic routes, Albania is ideal for those looking to venture beyond the usual tourist spots. Take the necessary precautions, familiarize yourself with local driving practices and you’re set for a road trip that will show you the best of this beautiful country.

The post Is It Safe to Rent a Car in Albania? 2024 Guide appeared first on Rent Car Albania.

Renting a car in Albania provides flexibility and convenience, allowing you to travel at your own pace and save money along the way.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about driving in Albania with an EU license, important requirements and why renting a car in Albania is the best option for you.

Driving with an EU License in Albania

If you hold a valid EU or EEA driving license, you’re in luck! Albania accepts these licenses, thus EU citizens can drive without the need for any additional paperwork. Nevertheless, for added insurance and to avoid any potential misunderstandings we recommend that you also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP 1949).

This document serves as an official translation of your EU driving license. Having an IDP on hand may prove useful when communicating with local authorities.

Minimum Age Requirement

The minimum driving age in Albania is 18 years. Keep in mind that this rule applies even if the driving minimum age in your home country is lower. Also, some car rental agencies in Albania may require drivers to have had their licenses for at least 3 years.

Make sure to consult the agency you’ve chosen. If you’re interested in renting a car in Albania, our team at Shehu Rental Cars would be more than happy to help you find the most economic options and provide you with all the information you need to know.

Required Documents for Driving in Albania

If you’re renting a car in Albania, it’s important that you carry specific documents to ensure full compliance with local regulations. Make sure to have the following:

Full, valid EU or EEA driving license

International Driving Permit (IDP 1949) – recommended but not mandatory

Proof of Insurance (minimum third-party insurance)

Proof of Identity (passport)

Vehicle Ownership Documents (V5C Certificate for personal vehicles)

Failure to present these documents can result in fines or other penalties, so it’s best to keep them readily accessible during your travels.

The Benefits of Renting a Car in Albania

Even though public transportation in Albania is available and relatively affordable, to fully enjoy the country’s natural beauty and historic sites renting a car is the most convenient and cheapest option. Here’s why:

Flexibility and Freedom

Having a rental car allows you to freely plan your itinerary according to your interests, schedule and mood. You can choose to visit remote attractions, go to “niche” destinations and travel at your own pace.

Albania’s tourism scene is quite diverse, with a variety of coastal towns, mountainous regions and UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered throughout the country. Having a rental car gives you the freedom to see it all.

Comfortable and Cost-Effective

Although buses and taxis are available, they are not the most comfortable option, especially for long trips or for those traveling in large groups or with luggage. Renting a car can be surprisingly cost-effective, especially if you’re traveling with family/friends or staying for a few days.

Keep in mind that in most cases, you’ll be able to get special discounts for longer rental periods, so you can save even more. All in all, the cost of paying for public transportation tickets or hiring a taxi definitely surpasses the cost of renting a car, especially when considering the affordable car rental rates you can easily find.

Albanian Road Conditions and Rules

Driving in Albania is quite easy and relatively straightforward, however, there are a few things you should keep in mind about road conditions and traffic regulations:

Road Quality

The majority of roads in Albania are in great condition, especially in and around major cities. Main highways have been significantly improved as well. However, in rural areas some roads may be less developed.

Extra caution is advised when driving on narrow, winding mountain roads. Also, if you’re planning to travel in mountainous regions during winter, you should check the weather or ask our agents whether snow chains are required.

Speed Limits and Seat Belt Laws

Speed limits in Albania are strictly enforced and vary depending on the type of road and vehicle. In residential areas the speed limit is typically 30 km/h, while on open roads it’s around 80 km/h. On highways, you can usually drive up to 110 km/h. Also, make sure everyone in the vehicle wears their seatbelt, as this is mandatory by law. If you fail to do so, you will most likely get a fine.

Child Safety

If you’re traveling with children make sure that they’re safely secured in appropriate car seats. If you don’t have your own equipment, you can ask the car rental agent to provide you with necessary extras.

Children under the age of 12 are not allowed to sit in the front seat and younger children must be restrained in child seats.

Traffic Culture in Albania

Albania has its own unique traffic culture. Trying to adapt to it can make your trip safer and more enjoyable:

Overtaking: In Albania, overtaking is allowed only on the left side of the road, similar to most EU countries.

Using the Horn: It’s common to hear drivers using their horns in cities, especially during heavy traffic or to signal overtaking. Outside urban areas, horns should only be used in emergencies.

Emergency Vehicles: As in most countries, emergency vehicles have priority, and drivers must yield to police, ambulances and fire services when they use flashing lights and sirens.

Parking in Albania

Parking in Albania may seem a bit confusing at first. You’ll see many drivers taking up free space near sidewalks, or even parking over the pavement. However, there are some parking regulations you should keep in mind if you want to avoid getting fined.

Fees apply in most public parking areas, however, there is usually a time limit. Also, the fees are quite cheap. Bars, hotels and restaurants in most cases provide free parking for guests. Paid parking areas are also widely available, so if you don’t want to waste too much time driving around, it’s always a good idea to just settle for these parking spots.

Just make sure to be mindful of “no parking” zones, as fines are often issued for parking violations.

Additional Safety Tips

Carry a First Aid Kit: Albanian law requires all vehicles to carry a first aid kit. It’s also advisable to keep items like spare tires, reflectors, and flashlight tools in your vehicle.

Stay Updated on Local Regulations: Traffic rules and road conditions can change, so check local regulations or ask your rental agency for any specific driving updates.

Final Thoughts: Why Renting a Car in Albania is Worth It

With scenic drives, easy access to hidden gems, and the freedom to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, renting a car enhances the travel experience. The best transportation option for all kinds of vacation plans in Albania, whether you’re visiting the Albanian Riviera, the historical cities of Berat and Gjirokastër or the gorgeous Albanian Alps, a car gives you unparalleled flexibility.

Just make sure to prepare with the necessary documents, follow local driving rules, and be cautious on Albania’s roads. By planning ahead and respecting local regulations, you’ll enjoy a safe and memorable trip through this beautiful Balkan nation.

The post Can I Drive in Albania with an EU License? appeared first on Rent Car Albania.

Here are the main reasons why choosing a rental car can significantly improve your trip in Albania:

1. Saves Time and Hassle

With car rentals available right upon your arrival at Tirana International Airport, you will save quite a lot of time instead of going through the hassle of finding a way out of the airport later. The various vehicles provided by our car rental agency can suit every need.

Whether you’re traveling for business meetings or simply sightseeing in Tirana, hitting the road anytime you want isn’t a problem when you have a rental car. You can avoid inflexible buses or taxis and move at your own pace from the very moment you land.

One of the biggest benefits of renting a car in Albania is pure freedom. Public transportation will not take you everywhere you need to go. If you’re planning to explore the country, you will want to check out some of the more beautiful spots like Ksamil Beach and fabulous mountain regions.

With your rented car, you are free to go out of Tirana and explore less-visited regions at your own pace. With your own vehicle at your disposal, you don’t have to be dependent on bus schedules or expensive guided tours.

3. Different Car Types

A number of different car types are available for rent at Tirana Airport. Be it a compact car for negotiating the narrow city streets or a SUV for a comfortable family road trip along the coast, there is something for every traveler.

Most of the time you’ll be able to find some pretty good deals, and you’ll be able to enjoy modern, fuel-efficient, comfortable vehicles suited to your needs. Just remember to book the vehicle in advance during summer tourist seasons when the demand is at its all-time high.

4. Affordable Car Rental Prices

Renting a car in Albania is a lot cheaper than the cost of taking taxis or going on guided tours. This is even more important if you’re going on longer trips with many transfers and changes of location. Most of the time, you’ll be able to find really cheap car rental prices, especially on early reservations or longer rentals. Also, the price of fuel in Albania is relatively cheap, so road trips will not be that expensive.

What You Need to Rent a Car at Tirana Airport

Renting a car in Tirana Airport is pretty easy, but there are some basic requirements to consider to make the process as smooth as possible. Here goes a quick guide on what to expect:

1. Driver’s License

In order to rent a car in Tirana you will need a valid driver’s license. Most international travelers can use their home country’s license for short-term car rentals. However, it is always recommended to get an International Driving Permit as a safe measure. You can ask your car rental agent if you’re unsure whether you need an IDP or not.

2. Minimum Age Requirement

The minimum age for renting a car in Albania is generally 21 years old. Nevertheless, some car rental agencies have their own rules which may include other age limits, especially in the case of premium and luxury vehicles.

3. Credit Card for Security Deposit

In some cases, you may need to make a security deposit using a credit card. The security deposit is held throughout the rental period and released upon return of the vehicle, provided no damages are recorded. Make sure to check the terms and conditions of the rental agency to know how much the deposit will be and what options are available insurance-wise.

4. Insurance

In many cases, you’ll be offered a basic insurance plan alongside the car rental price. Make sure to closely examine your options for coverage. Consider whether you want to invest in extra insurance, especially if you are planning on driving through remote rural areas or really long distances.

Tips for Renting a Car at Tirana Airport

Considering all the benefits and requirements of car rentals in Albania, here are some tips to ensure that you have the best experience:

1. Book in Advance

If you want to get the best car rental deals you should try to book as early as possible. If you’re planning your trip during peak tourism season, booking in advance is even more important. Our platform gives you an overview of the prices and vehicle options for different dates and at different pick-up locations.

Remember, that with longer car rentals you benefit from special discounts, so consider planning a few more days into your trip if you really wish to explore Albania in the most budget-friendly way.

2. Hidden Fees

Before wrapping up your car rental preparations, make sure to check about any possible extra feeds. Sometimes, some car rental deals charge for different services. For example, if you want to involve another driver you may need to pay an extra fee.

Same thing goes for special features such as GPS, child car seats or cross-border trips. It is always good to know all about these additional fees in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises down the road.

3. Inspect the Vehicle Before Leaving

Always remember to give your vehicle a good check for existing damage before you leave the airport. Take pictures of any scratches, dents, or other problems and inform the rental agency as well to avoid any misunderstandings when the time comes that you should return the car.

4. Get Familiar With The Road Rules

Keep in mind that driving habits in Albania are a little different from the rest of Europe. Driving may be a bit more relaxed than in other European countries, and if you’re not familiar with the Balkans, it may seem a bit overwhelming at first.

The good news is that main roads and highways are all in very good condition. However, the traffic in Tirana gets really crowded at rush hour, therefore, it is very important to keep calm and stay alert at all times. Be careful and follow the road signs which are both in Albanian and English.

You Rented a Car in Albania. Now What?

Your rental car will allow you to see some of the most breathtaking areas within Albania. Here are a few of those places you must see that can easily be accessible by car:

1. Tirana

You will start your journey at Tirana International Airport, where you will pick up the vehicle you’ve booked online. After picking up your car, you can head towards the city center and check into your hotel.

Tirana, the lively capital city of Albania, is one of the most popular tourism destinations in the country. Skanderbeg Square is usually a gathering point for all tourists who stop to take pictures of the monument or visit the nearby attractions.

After parking around the area or at the designated underground parking, you can visit the National History Museum or the Et’hem Bey Mosque. Close by you will also find the Bunk’Art Museum which has gained huge popularity over the recent years.

Afterwards, you can drive around the Bllok district – one of the most luxurious and trendy areas of the city, or you can drive to Dajti National Park. Enjoy some time in nature or go for a cable car ride.

2. Kruja

Kruja is a small town with a medieval castle and bazaar, only a 40 minute drive from the Tirana Airport. It is ideal for day trips if you are interested in learning more about Albanian history and buying souvenirs.

3. Berat

Drive about 90 minutes south of Tirana to Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows”. Enjoy a walk through a city known for its distinctive Ottoman-era architecture. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is absolutely perfect for those who are looking for an authentic cultural experience.

4. The Albanian Riviera

Now head south to the stunning Albanian Riviera, a coastline with some of the best beaches in Europe. The villages of Dhërmi, Himara, and Ksamil offer crystal-clear waters, scenic landscapes, and a dynamic nightlife in summer. Albania’s beaches are definitely one of the best charms of this country.

Probably one of the best things about car rentals in Albania is the freedom that comes along with them. Albania has plenty of hidden, off-the-beaten-track spots which can’t always be reached through public transportation. When you have your own rental car, you can make your schedule freely, whether that means driving around the lively streets of Tirana or exploring the seclusive beaches lining the Albanian Riviera.

Public transportation in Albania is very unpredictable, particularly outside of the towns. The buses and minibuses don’t always run on a regular schedule, which makes local traveling a little tricky especially for tourists. If you rent a car in Albania you can avoid all these hassles and enjoy the convenience of traveling on your own terms.

Car Rental in Tirana | Quick Overview

While Tirana itself is a lively city with much to offer, there are plenty of “must-see” attractions outside the capital. With a rental car you can easily visit different cities or tourist attractions. Think Dajti Mountain with its breathtaking views or the historic town of Kruja, famous for its castle and lively bazaar.

If you appreciate natural sceneries, then renting a car in Albania is even more worth it. Some of the best places you can visit include the Llogara Pass – a mountain road that offers amazing views of the Ionian Sea, or the Theth National Park – an amazing mountainous park that is accompanied by a scenic drive through the wilderness.

Road Conditions and Safety in Albania

The infrastructure of roads in Albania has considerably improved over recent years. Highways and main roads are in really good shape, but rural roads can be narrow. As long as you pay attention to driving carefully you’ll be just fine. Keep in mind that local driving habits are more relaxed compared to what you may be used to.

That being said, driving in Albania is no more difficult than elsewhere in the Balkans and with a little patience you’ll find it quite easy. Having a GPS or simply using Google Maps will come in handy. Keep in mind that road signs are often less than obvious, particularly out in the countryside.

Cost of Renting a Car in Albania

Another reason why it’s a very good option to rent a car are the affordable car rental prices in Albania. The cost of renting a car in Albania is pretty low compared to other European countries. You can hire a basic car for as low as €20 – €30 per day, depending on the season and car model.

Moreover, fuel prices are much more affordable in comparison with other countries, making the overall cost of road-tripping through Albania fairly budget-friendly.

Our car rental agency in Tirana guarantees the best prices, attentive customer service and overall the most economic solutions for transportation. We offer a diverse selection of vehicles that combine both affordability and comfort.

Important Things You Should Know Before Renting a Car in Albania

Here are some of the most crucial factors to consider before renting a car in Albania:

License Requirements: You can hire a car in Albania if you have an international driving license or a valid license issued by your country of residence. Most companies will require that you have held your license for at least one year.

Insurance: When traveling to any country it’s important that you get basic insurance. Some car rental policies include insurance in your rental. Make sure to check the blueprint or ask the car rental agent to provide you with more information on your insurance. Also, think about whether you need to add extra cover for things like undercarriage, tire damage, etc.

Age Restrictions: Although in Albania the minimum driving age is 18 years old, you need to be at least 21 years old to rent a car. Some car rental companies may have specific regulations set in place, therefore, it’s best that you consult the agent directly.

Fuel Policy: Prior to renting your car, make sure that you’re clear on the fuel policy. Most car rental companies operate on full to full policies. In other words, since you get your car with a full tank in the beginning, you need to return it with a full tank of fuel as well. Make sure to ask the car rental agency about these policies to avoid being charged any extras at the end.

What Tourists Say About Car Rental in Tirana

Most tourists say that renting a car in Tirana is definitely worth it. They report that the overall cost of renting a car in Albania is much more affordable than repeatedly calling for a taxi or getting the bus.

Also, most foreigners appreciate how easy it is to find a rental car in Tirana. Vehicle models are diverse and rental prices are budget-friendly, especially when compared to other countries in Europe or beyond.

1. Ease of Booking

Renting a car in Tirana is generally a stress-free experience. You’ll easily find options to make advance bookings online which will save you from last-minute headaches. For example, at Shehu Rental Cars we’ve made sure to create a user-friendly website which allows visitors to browse through the available vehicles, compare prices and benefits from current discounts with just a few simple clicks. Our terms and conditions are transparents and our rates are some of the most competitive in the market.

Some tourists say that customer service is considerably more friendly than in larger international corporations. Afterall, Albania’s economy thrives on tourism, thus, hospitality and tourism businesses have developed an attentive, flexible approach to accommodate visitors from all over the globe.

2. Friendly and Servicing Staff

One recurring theme found in reviews of tourists addresses the friendly and helpful nature of car rental agencies’ staff. Most tourists receive recommendations, tips and tricks and “hidden” driving routes which can be pretty helpful to new tourists.

This is surely useful for first-time visitors who are looking for a way to experience a truly authentic feel of the country. This personal touch from car rental specialists helps tourists stay well-informed and supported throughout their whole trip.

3. Good Value for Money

One of the most frequent comments we hear is how affordable car rental in Tirana actually is. Relatively cheap, car rental prices in Albania are rather reasonable especially when compared to other countries.

Many low-budget travelers will benefit from the fact that they can save money when renting a car. Reviewers often say even though the prices of rentals are competitive, the quality of the cars is exceptional, and many people have gotten very clean and obviously well-maintained vehicles.

4. Driving Can Be Difficult

Even though many tourists enjoyed the flexibility of car rentals, some say that driving can seem a bit tricky at first. If you are not familiar with the local driving style – very much similar to all of the Balkans – driving in Albania may seem a bit erratic at first.

Since the traffic in Tirana is quite dense during peak hours, you will need to exercise a certain degree of patience when driving through the city. Cars and pedestrians share the road in a less structured way than in other European capitals.

Nevertheless, most of the tourists say that once you’re out of the city, driving becomes much easier and actually very pleasant. The scenery is amazing and the peace and quiet you get from driving at your own pace is priceless.

5. Finding Off the Beaten Path

One of the main reasons why tourists strongly recommend renting a car in Albania is the fact that car rental allows you to reach less accessible places. Most reviews mention the thrill of finding secluded beaches, small villages and scenic drives which are not accessible through public transportation.

6. Ability to Change Plans

Surely, being able to switch your itinerary as you please is a huge advantage. Unlike public transport or organized tours, with a rental car you can change your plans and schedule at any given time. Whether you want to stop at an unplanned destination, take a detour up to a viewpoint or extend your stay in a town you loved, having your own vehicle at your disposal allows you to do so.

7. Positive experiences with local agencies

Many tourists also report on the reliability of car rental in Albania. We’ve had an exceptional experience with our clients. At Shehu Rental Cars we’ve gotten consistent positive reviews on our professionalism. Competitive prices are the icing on the cake. We take pride in our modern vehicles, strict maintenance protocols and attention to minute details.

Best Places to Visit in Albania with a Rental Car

Your rental car opens up Albania in ways that public transportation can’t. Most of the international car rental agencies have offices in Tirana. It is recommended to book in advance during summer months.

Road Conditions: During the last years, Albania’s road infrastructure has developed extremely well. You should be at least 21 years old and have held your U.S. license for at least one year.

Additional fees may also be charged for drivers under 25. The IDP is a translation of your license and is required by Albanian authorities, ensuring that you meet local driving regulations.

Can I hire a car in Albania with a UK driving license?

You can hire a car in Albania if you have a UK license, but you will also need a ‘1968’ International Driver’s Permit. An IDP itself is valid for three years or until your UK license expires, whichever happens first.

An IDP is available from any UK Post Office at a small cost and must be carried along with your UK license when driving in Albania.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Albania?

In Albania, the minimum age to rent a car is 21 years. In some cases, there is an upper limit of 70 years. You may be charged more if you’re less than 25 years old. You will have to check about these age policies with your car rental company.

Does car insurance come with car renting in Albania?

Basic car insurance is usually inbuilt in the price and covers third-party liability. You may want to consider taking additional coverage to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses in case of damages: CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) or Super CDW are recommended. It is always recommended to check what conditions you have in terms of coverage before you start driving.

Are there toll roads in Albania?

There are no toll roads in Albania, so any road trip within the country will be very affordable. You will likely be asked to pay small fees for parking in city centers or near very popular tourist attractions. Keep some cash on hand for these charges, as card payments may not always be accepted in rural areas.

Do I need a GPS to drive in Albania?

Many car-rental companies do offer GPS, but using the navigation apps on your smartphone – including Google Maps – may work just as well. Just be sure to download offline maps before you leave because rural areas often have spotty signal coverage.

The post 7-Day Albania Itinerary: The Perfect Car Rental Trip appeared first on Rent Car Albania.

Many tourists seem to frequently ask the question “Is public transport or car rental the best option for getting around Albania?”. While both options have their pros, most people would recommend that you rent a car in Albania. In this blog post, we will thoroughly compare both alternatives in hopes of helping you make the right choice.

Why Consider Renting a Car in Albania?

Public transport in Albania has been slightly improved, however, car rentals have several advantages over it. Comfort and flexibility are just two of the main reasons that come to mind. Let’s break down why choosing a rental car is a smarter choice for those traveling to Albania.

Better flexibility and complete freedom

Among the main reasons why people opt for car rental is the feeling of freedom this option provides. In Albania, most towns and cities do have public transportation, including buses and minibuses.

However, they are usually notoriously unreliable in regards to their schedules. Moreover, they often do not reach most of the remote areas in Albania which are worth visiting for tourism purposes.

Having your own rental car means that you are free from these rigid schedules. You can stop at any time and make the journey as fast as you want. Whether you are going to the pristine beaches of the Albanian Riviera or the ancient ruins in Butrint, with a car you will be able to truly experience everything Albania has to offer.

Access to off-the-beaten-path destinations

Albania is full of “secret treasures” – think remote mountain villages, secluded beaches and plenty of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many of these incredible spots are difficult or impossible to reach by public transport.

For example, destinations such as Theth or southern Ksamil often require very long and usually quite complicated journeys on a bus. Car rental will give you the opportunity to not limit yourself to the main roads.

You can find the easiest and best routes without needing to deal with complicated combinations of public transport lines. You can easily get to the most isolated areas without being dependent on a bus network.

Enjoy the convenience of traveling at your own pace

Renting a car in Albania means you are in full control of your time. Public transport is quite cheap, but in most cases you will have to waste so much time just waiting for the bus to arrive. Buses operate on quite unpredictable schedules, and routes seldom match your plans.

Furthermore, some public transport routes may run once or twice a day and that will get you stuck in one place, waiting for several hours without knowing if you missed the bus. With a rental car you can easily avoid this issue altogether. You can set off whenever you want without worrying about having to follow the schedule of someone else.

Optimal comfort and safety

We mentioned comfort being one of the main reasons why it’s better to rent a car in Albania. While public transport options are generally affordable, they can also be quite uncomfortable. Buses and vans, for instance, tend to be crowded and may lack proper ventilation, making long journeys less than ideal.

On the other hand, a rental car gives you control over your own environment. Whether it’s the temperature, the amount of space or simply the ability to stop for a break whenever you need it, having a car at your disposal is definitely the optimal choice.

Moreover, having your own car often feels safer, especially when navigating the often narrow and winding roads in more remote areas. Also, car rental agencies in Tirana regularly evaluate and monitor the condition of their vehicles, following strict guidelines and regulations.

Driving in Albania: What To Expect

While renting a car in Albania is undoubtedly beneficial, it’s essential to know what to expect when driving in the country. Here are a few things to consider before hitting the road.

Road conditions in Albania

Albania has made significant improvements to its road infrastructure in recent years. Major highways connecting Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë, etc., are well-maintained, and many other primary roads are in decent condition.

However, some rural roads and mountain routes can be slightly trickier to navigate due to potholes, uneven surfaces or narrow lanes. That being said, rental cars in Albania are equipped to easily handle the country’s varied terrain.

Opting for an SUV or a car with a higher ground clearance may be beneficial if you plan to explore really remote areas.

Driving culture

If you’re not used to the region’s driving style, drivers in Albania may seem somewhat chaotic, especially in busy cities like Tirana. While this might feel overwhelming at first, it is easily manageable with caution and patience.

Also, in rural areas driving tends to be more relaxed, and you’ll likely encounter fewer cars. Be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists, and the occasional stray animal crossing the road in smaller towns and villages.

Costs of Renting a Car in Albania | Other Requirements

The cost of renting a car in Albania is quite affordable compared to many other European countries. Depending on the type of vehicle, prices can range from €20 – €50 per day. If you’re planning an extended stay, you will be able to benefit from discounts for long-term rentals.

To rent a car in Albania you’ll need a valid driver’s license. For most European travelers, a national license is sufficient, but non-European visitors may need to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP). Always confirm the requirements with your rental agency in advance.

Parking and Fuel | What Should You Keep in Mind

Parking in Albania is generally easy to find, particularly outside of major cities. In Tirana and other urban areas, you may need to pay for street parking, but rates are usually very affordable. Many hotels and guesthouses offer free parking for guests, which adds to the convenience of renting a car.

Fuel stations are common throughout Albania, especially along major roads and highways. Prices are on par with those in other European countries, so it’s wise to budget for fuel costs. Some gas stations may accept credit cards, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash, particularly when driving in more remote areas.

Public Transportation in Albania

Public transportation within Albania is cheap and, to a certain extent, functions well; however, it is often an ordeal for many traveling individuals. The realization of this fact comes in handy when one considers if renting a car is a better option.

The local minibuses are the most used public transportation mode ithin Albania. The majority of these vehicles are found in larger towns and cities and provide routes to various locations.

However, they do not keep to a strict timetable. This is indeed a headache for tourists. You often have to wait for the bus to fill up before it takes off. And this could seriously delay your travel program. Furthermore, their state of condition is another thing entirely: some have minimal comfort on the long journeys.

For longer journeys between major towns such as Tirana, Durrës, and Saranda, there are larger bus services. However, these routes often take considerably longer because the buses stop regularly along the route. Adding to this, Albania’s mountainous landscape can mean slow meandering journeys, particularly if you’re headed towards the north or south of the country.

Public transport in Albania doesn’t cover all places of interest for tourists. Many spots, hiking trails, and attractions of cultural interest are unreachable by bus. For example, the Blue Eye Spring and the beautiful Gjipe Beach are nearly inaccessible unless you have a car.

Car Rental

Public Transport

Flexibility

Full control over schedule and routes

Fixed routes and unreliable schedules

Accessibility

Access to remote areas and off-the-beaten-path spots

Limited to major towns and cities

Comfort

Private, air-conditioned, comfortable

Crowded minibuses and basic bus services

Cost

Moderate (rental fees + fuel)

Low (inexpensive fares)

Travel Speed

Direct routes, faster travel time

Slower due to multiple stops and indirect routes

Availability

Readily available from rental agencies

Dependent on local timetables, with fewer options

Safety

More control over safety

Lower safety standards in older vehicles

Public Transport vs. Car Rental in Albania.

Tirana Driving Tips: How to Get Around the Capital

Driving in Albania’s capital, Tirana, can be an adventure on its own. Being the busiest and most populous city in Albania, Tirana offers a different set of challenges than driving on the main highways. However, with just a few helpful driving tips, you will navigate the city with ease while enjoying the benefits of having a rental car in Albania.

Expect Some Traffic

The city of Tirana is notorious for its heavy traffic, mainly during the morning and evening rush hours – from 8:00 to 10:00 AM and from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Traffic jams are very common, especially in the city center and around big crossroads.

It is not uncommon to be caught up in slow traffic. So, keep in mind that reaching certain places through narrow streets full of cars, buses, bikes, and pedestrians may take some patience.

If you want to get around Tirana, you will either want to travel outside of peak times or make sure you calculate enough time for making the journey. Google Maps is very reliable in Albania, as it can help you find your way around town, get around traffic jams, and park easily. It will give you real-time updates on traffic, which can be very helpful to avoid delays as you get past the more crowded parts of the city.

Just a note: road construction and building projects are often going on in Tirana, and some routes may be closed or rerouted from time to time. In that case, do not be afraid to go through alternative routes suggested by Google Maps or simply ask locals because they usually know all the shortcuts.

Be Aware of Roundabouts

Roundabouts are very common in Tirana, but they could get confusing at times, especially during the day’s peak. Always yield to the cars already inside the roundabout. When reaching any roundabout, make sure you are already in the correct lane for your intended exit.

Most roundabouts in Tirana are multi-laned, so being alert and observant will allow you to go through them successfully.

Parking in Tirana

In general, parking in Tirana during peak traffic hours is not that easy, especially in the center of the city where the demand is high. However, there are a number of parking lots and garages available. On-street parking is also allowed within the city, normally on meters.

For your ease, look around for blue-lined parking spots. Green-and-white lines may be reserved for residents; therefore, get your vehicle parked in the right zone. Moreover, you can also find parking available for many hotels’, restaurants’, and cafes’ guests, so you shouldn’t ignore the possibility that your accommodation offers free parking services.

Final Thoughts: Why Renting a Car in Albania Is Worth It

If you want to comfortably explore the rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and hidden corners in Albania, it is totally worth it to rent a car from Shehu Rental Cars.
